Opening his hands, a man thinks: Meticulous bakers, we are left with you
when reading wearies us again. You canıt keep insects from lying trapped
in the bread dough. Giving a twelve pound loaf to the child who will take
it back to a hamlet more than a league away, you say: can you carry it all
the way, itıs heavy, can you? Looking at tears of dough on a baker boyıs
forearm, women feel an obscure tenderness as when their cottages are set
ablaze. The round loaves, in woven baskets, show cracks and burnt spots
and when cut those smooth-walled holes people call their eyes.
